Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Jae-ha
◎ Character's Canon: Akatsuki no Yona
◎ Character's Age: 25
◎ Canon Point: Mid-Chapter 41 (after licking the Scale of Hakuryuu)
◎ Background/History: akatsuki no yona wiki!

But there are some little canon facts that they don't really expand on and expect people to already know so I'm gonna elaborate a little on them!

"The Legend of the Four Dragons? A master I have to protect? That's absurd!
Having my fate decided for me before I was born.... goes against my views of beauty!
Just watch me run away from my fate."

Unfortunately, Jae-ha did not grow up in a lovely family with 2.5 kids and a white picket fence, but rather his childhood was often spent in chains, attached to a wall with only a grumpy and bitter old man for company. Admittedly, yes, when Jae-ha is actually asked about childhood he dramatizes it considerably (see above quote) but there was still something distinctly awful about growing up as the Ryokuryuu - the child born with the Dragon’s Foot that granted them abnormally strong leg power, to the point where their jumping could look similar to flying and take them clear over a village. It was custom for the child born as the Ryokuryuu to be bound up in chains, often because if they weren’t, then they’d disappear right off into the sky, curious and adventurous. When asked, Jae-ha merely shrugs, calling it “the nature of the Ryokuryuu”.

But to expand a little bit more on what Jae-ha actually is, he’s simply legendary. Literally. He’s part of a legend that started with King Hiryuu and four people who were chosen to drink the blood of four dragons - one dragon per person. The Ryokuryuu (Green Dragon) was always gifted with the power of the Dragon’s Leg, making them capable of jumping great heights to the point of soaring, and also they packed a mean kick. Now ever since the start, the dragons are meant to reincarnate in new children in each of their villages every year. Some villages pamper these children while others, like the Ryokuryuu’s, consider them curses. The Ryokuryuu line in particular is very difficult to handle, as not only do they have a tendency to try to escape their village but they also they’re incredibly showy and dramatic people, the type to naturally use their power and stand out in a crowd even when they’re supposed to try to lay low. Jae-ha inherited both of these traits. He also inherited the belief that his life is destined to serve the reincarnation of King Hiryuu, in whatever form they appear in. All the dragons are meant to naturally want to serve and adore the King Hiryuu reincarnation -- and Jae-ha hates it.

Aside from the perks of his actual powers, Jae-ha hates everything that comes with being Ryokuryuu, especially the part where it’s already predetermined that he’s supposed to live his life in service of another.

"Up until now, and from here on out, as well.... I'll simply follow the path I choose to live for myself.
Nothing is violating my principles of beauty."

Then, during the actual events of the manga, the dragons and King Hiryuu incarnate came to him. He fought really hard when it came to turning down their invitation to come travel with them, but after the young girl, Yona who was the last thing that Jae-ha was expecting to represent King Hiryuu, proved her strength to him and earned his respect, he decided to follow along. In truth, even Jae-ha isn't completely capable of refusing the innate instincts that are pummeled into him thanks to his dragon's blood - though even then, he tries to reason it out as his own free will.

◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nope to both!

◎ Personality: They say that it's in the Ryokuryuu's nature to be loud, bold, and unabashedly themselves. As a result, it's easy to identify Jae-ha's dragon nature in the way that he carries himself in any regular conversation. To anyone that he meets on the street (and particularly if he deems them attractive) he is confident and friendly, openly chatting with any stranger that catches his fancy. Even during those first conversations, he holds nothing back - if he thinks someone has an ugly heart, he'll openly say that they're better off as food for the flowers than taking up space in the world of the living. If he thinks that someone is attractive, there's no hesitation in his flirtation and admiration. It's enough to get another person talking about themselves, wrapped up in conversation easy as can be when Jae-ha manages to be such a smooth talker. If he deems someone worthy and the topic manages to come up in conversation, he'll even mention to them that he's the Ryokuryuu, despite the fact that he's trying to keep his identity a secret so that he doesn't attract attention from the other dragons. Regardless of Jae-ha's intentions, the fact that he flaunts his dragon power and does nothing to limit his words and actions speaks to his true nature.

After all, the Ryokuryuu essentially has the power of flight - the dragon's leg allowing them to travel so far and so fast that it can make people dizzy just trying to keep up with them. They are independent and the fact that they are chained up as children to keep them from going anywhere only adds to this fact. However whereas Jae-ha's predecessor managed to break free and suddenly found himself lost, unsure of where to go once he was no longer chained, Jae-ha feels no hesitation about his travels. He traveled all around the country before he chose to settle in one port town. The most important word in that sentence being 'chose'. Some of the other dragons might accept their fate - that they're supposed to live and die for King Hiryuu's reincarnation, however that may be - but Jae-ha wants to kick his fate in the face and preferably down a flight of stairs. To be shackled to a predetermined set of events inspires a very keen hatred in him to the point where now he believes that anyone who takes away another's freedom (i.e. slave drivers, human traffickers) deserves to die and rot in the ground. Because you see, it offends his delicate sense of ~*beauty*~.

Or at least that's what he tells people, dramatic guy that he is.

But opening the door to his opinions on beauty does reveal Jae-ha's ability to think more analytically and deeply. He has complicated thoughts on duty - he thinks that people who choose to be bodyguards are in an unfortunate spot but if you're a fisherman who become a pirate to save a town, then you're almost instantly on his good side. Jae-ha doesn't believe in the altruism for the sake of justice. He watched corrupt government officials bully townspeople and take whatever food they may have in the form of taxes, even as much as it bothered him, but he only steps in once his sense of beauty is infringed upon -- which is to say that they raised their hand against a young girl. However something can be said for the fact that he was able to restrain himself at all, even though he came from years upon years of acting as a pirate.

It sheds light on the fact that Jae-ha is able to understand the complex political situation that covers their country and even though he's naturally defiant towards authority, he doesn't feel the need to step in against their responsibilities until they take it just a step too far. Even when it's suggested to their group to take back the castle to help their runaway princess and start a coup, Jae-ha is the voice of reason that says that it really isn't that simple. Their country has already been rocked by political upheavals and the shockwaves of yet another coup would hit far past their merry little band of misfits.

More than that, he's very perceptive when it comes to people's emotional states and often pays attention to everything about them - their words, their eyes, their small tics all fall under his scrutiny as he picks up on how they feel. He can sense Hak's blood lust for his traitorous best friend just from his tone of voice but at the same time, the other man's sadness from being betrayed in the first place doesn't escape him either. When Jae-ha reminds the group of how Hak closes up and has a dark aura every time the new king is mentioned, he also sets them straight in the belief that maybe Hak hated this person. Rather, Jae-ha can pick up on the fact that it means instead that Hak was very fond of him. Although Jae-ha constantly appears as though he's flighty and oblivious, he is far more attuned to people's complicated thoughts than any of the other dragons.

.... that said, to some degree, he is pretty flighty and oblivious. However he often uses this to his benefit. In the port town of Awa, collecting information is easy when you're an attractive young man who's willing to chat up anyone on the street. For that matter, he's also aware of how attractive he is, happy to use his dashing good looks to invite people to browse Yoon's wares at a flea market. His natural desire for attention and telling people about himself also invites others to do the same and reciprocate, thus letting Jae-ha know if they're trustworthy. Of course, he does it so seamlessly and while at the same time flirting with anything attractive on two legs that sometimes people don't even realize how much they're talking until he's already managed to pull tidbits of information from them.

As for people who manage to get close to Jae-ha, they often.... have no idea that that's even the case. His behavior with people that he likes, such as the pirates of Awa that took care of him for years, can almost be considered tsundere. He reacts to their praise by brushing it off, no matter how much it actually touches him and makes him feel appreciated. Then only once they're drunkenly passed out and admitting that they don't want him to leave on his journey to see the rest of the wide world, he will admit that he really, truly loves the smelly bunch of pirates that he considers his family. When his captain, the one person that he's even close to honest with and he has an absurd amount of admiration for, calls him out on not being very honest - all he say is "I'm a very honest human being".

Obviously, he's not.

Rather, Jae-ha expresses his affection for people through actions before he does so with words. He'll immediately run in front of a charging bear for his comrades even though they are perfectly capable of defending themselves and he'll go above and beyond to try to keep someone's secrets. Even though he won't say he'll go with Yona on her journey, the night before she leaves, he says that he just wants to spend the party with a cute girl and asks her to sit with him. Those moments show Jae-ha's true affection for people that have earned his respect and devotion. Then even though he has a naturally flighty personality that often involves him bouncing around the whole wide world, if he finds someone or a group of people to devote himself to, then it's almost impossible to get rid of him.

He's kind of a dangerous person to get involved with, all things considered. Also best to make sure that your children's ears are covered because at any random moment he might make an incredibly suggestive and masochistic comment. There's really no holding back with this guy.

◎ Powers/Abilities: In terms of actual powers, Jae-ha was born as the Ryokuryuu - which essentially means that he was blessed with the power of the Green Dragon and therefore born with a dragon foot. This dragon foot is his right foot and essentially looks something like this. Somehow Jae-ha managed to find boots that accommodate his Very Specific Needs so no one actually sees it though. Either way, it gives him amazing strength in his legs and lets him jump so far that it's almost like he's flying. He easily managed to make it from a pirate ship harbored in the ocean to the middle of the town he's next to. There's no issue with him carrying people either, emphasizing the strength in his legs. People often reflect that even though he's just jumping, it looks like he's soaring. Unfortunately this is completely useless if you toss him into a body of water, seeing as he has nothing solid to use as leverage when dunked.

In addition to that, Jae-ha is a skilled fighter. Though he does specialize in kicks, he's also developed his arm strength so that he has excellent aim with throwing knives. After fighting alongside pirates for years, he's gotten very good at everything that comes with it. Pillaging other ships, knocking out their guards, infiltrating their enemy vessels and keeping in the shadows - he's happy to do anything that his captain requests of him and often does it with a smile too. Years of fighting alongside a crew have made him able to keep track of the movements of his comrades as well, knowing when to jump right on in (literally) and save their ass before they get it handed to them.

Lastly, Jae-ha's also really good at random odds and ends. He's a skilled enough musician to be able to play the flute as well as the erhu, the latter being a foreign instrument for an entirely different country. He knows all sorts of genres of music and is quite good at it too, playing lullabies alongside happy, drinking medleys. On top of that, he's also very good at manicures apparently. If you ask for a random, mostly useless task, there's a good chance that Jae-ha would be able to deliver.
